This is a follow-up article to the January 2024 forecast which you can view by clicking here. I stated that we would experience an active precipitation pattern with multiple storm systems anticipated for the month. The first one hits this weekend with a stronger system early next week, so read on for the full details…
A frontal system will zip from west to east later tonight through Saturday night bringing a shot of light snow to the forecast area. Light snow will increase across southwest up into central Iowa late this afternoon through tonight with this activity continuing to drift east into central and eastern Iowa overnight into Saturday morning. Once Saturday hits, this first wave exits eastern Iowa and at the same time, a more potent wave of light snow will begin to work across western Iowa later Saturday morning. This wave will continue to advance east into central and eastern Iowa later Saturday afternoon. We should see snow begin to taper off across western Iowa by Saturday evening with activity continuing to move east. All precipitation should exit eastern Iowa by later Sunday morning. A trace-2″ of snow accumulation is likely across a large portion of the state.
Then all eyes are on the stronger storm system that we have been discussing since New Year’s Eve that will work across the forecast area later Monday through Tuesday unleashing a round of snow and strong wind gusts. As I continue to crunch the numbers, light snowfall accumulations will be possible across northern Iowa with light to moderate accumulations across portions of central and southern Iowa. Then heavier snowfall amounts (near Winter Storm criteria) will be possible across extreme southern Iowa. Confidence on this is moderate and leading toward moderate/high over the next couple of days. In addition to the snow, gusty northerly winds will be on the backside of the system Tuesday which may lead to reduced visibility before the system exits. We will revisit this threat over the weekend with a final forecast and full model suite to follow.
Additional storm systems are in the pipeline over the next 2 weeks with the next one around Jan. 11-12th, so updates will be frequent going forward.
