The official Iowa Storm Center January forecast is out, and it comes with an active precipitation pattern and colder temperatures, so read on for the details…
The month of December was quiet until a long-duration pacific storm system brought rain and ice accumulation to the forecast area surrounding Christmas day. Now moving forward, temperatures will continue to hold daytime highs in the 30s to lower 40s this week but as storm systems begin to dominate the forecast area over the next 2 weeks, colder temperatures will follow. The next system looks to hit this upcoming weekend (Jan. 6-7th) with a stronger one January 8-11th that may have lasting wintry impacts. I would be prepared for a big plowable snow event in the plains during this time. Obviously, the exact details on track, location, timing, and totals will be ironed out in the short term. Signals are strong though that a round of arctic air will follow this stronger storm system into the latter half of week 2 and beginning of week 3 heading into the middle of the month.
In short, temperatures will run from average to above average while precipitation will run above normal in week 2 heading into the early part of week 3. The Iowa Storm Center weeks 2 and 3 temperature and precipitation departures are below.
LONG RANGE: The back half of January should provide more ridging followed by more troughing. Long story short, the active pattern has the potential to continue through late month.
