January 2022 Medium Range Forecast Outlook For Iowa; Storm Potential Next Week

We have saw several Alberta clipper systems throughout the month of January and changes are coming so read on for the details…

Overall precipitation has ran below normal much of the month and I don’t look for that to change for the rest of the month as we get close to closing January. We have been in this northwest flow pattern for weeks which has brought several clipper systems and plenty of cold air to the state. As we close January and open February we are in for a change that will include a different storm track the first week of February. I am watching for a trough to develop in the western United States early next week with a storm system that will likely slide across the central US the middle part of next week. What we don’t know at this distance is who will see the impacts and what type of precipitation. Some guidance has been converging on a more southern solution and at this point I don’t disagree considering we will have a high that will bring cold dry air into the state towards the back end of the event.

The more southern solutions would favor a accumulating snow event across central and southern Iowa with the highest potentially in the southern part of the state. That said, I wouldn’t get too caught up in that yet since we are still several days away and this will continue to evolve. So this is simply a “heads up” notice of what’s potentially in store next week. Looking further out…it’s possible that additional light snow chances follow into the second week of February but confidence is lower on this side of the forecast. Additional updates will follow once we know more.
