A storm system will slide through the forecast area starting Thursday morning and ending later Thursday night with quick shot of rain/snow and strong north/northwest winds, so read on for the details.
Rain will work into western Iowa Thursday morning and quickly press east into central and eastern Iowa by late Thursday morning. The frontal zone should arrive late Thursday morning across western Iowa with rain switching over to snow from west to east. A small window of sleet will be possible during the transition period due to warmer temperatures aloft. We should see this activity begin to exit from west to east by later Thursday afternoon through Thursday night as the system works off to the east. In addition, strong north/northwest winds sustained 20-30 MPH with gusts 40-55 MPH and crashing temperatures will usher in on the backside of the front leading to blowing of snow across northwest Iowa. Near white-out conditions can’t be completely ruled out during falling snow in rural areas. Low temperatures Thursday night will dip into the teens and 20s across the state.
Snowfall amounts will generally be light with a quick 2-6″ of snow across parts of northwest Iowa and a trace-2″ elsewhere. Strong northwest winds will likely continue into Friday with gusts 30-40 MPH for the forecast area. Additional strong wind gusts and wrap around snow showers are anticipated Saturday.
