Iowa Update: Discussing wintry mix risk Tuesday…watching stronger system Saturday.

We had wintry mix and gusty winds Sunday and now the second storm system will hit on Tuesday so read on for the details…

Our next weather system is on the horizon and is expected to impact the state on Tuesday. A low pressure system is centered over the northwestern United States this evening and eventually this will make it’s way through the Rockies and into the central plains by Tuesday with a strong cold front. Precipitation will start developing by Tuesday morning across southern Iowa and gradually spread northeast into central and eastern Iowa by the middle of the day. An advancing warm frontal zone will lead to a wintry mix of precipitation across central and northeast Iowa. Further south in southern Iowa a light to moderate rain will be likely. Some light snow is also possible in the morning across northwest Iowa.

Snowfall accumulations will once again be fairly light across most areas with an exception of 2-6″ of snow expected across northeast Iowa with the storm system and a light glaze of ice will be possible. A strong cold front will follow behind the main event and bring much colder air to the area. The coldest temperatures will be found across northern Iowa with single digits Tuesday night. The system will move east of the state by late Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning. The snow and ice models are available below. Another update will follow later this week regarding an additional storm system that may hit on Saturday (New Year’s Day). So if you have plans this coming weekend, continue to monitor the latest forecast here at Iowa Storm Center.
