Iowa Forecast: Wintry mix today…tracking additional snow chances rest of week.

Our next weather system will move in today with wintry mix and accumulating snow. The latest updated snow and ice models are included so read on for the details…

A low pressure system will sweep through today bringing wintry mix to areas of Iowa. Precipitation will start to work into southern Iowa early this morning and gradually spread to the north and east into central and eastern Iowa. The colder side to the system will exist across north central into northeast Iowa where mainly snow is expected. It is possible that light snow can fall for a time in northwest Iowa later this morning but I would only give this area precipitation percentage values of 30-40% meaning a lower chance for snow. So main impacts will be felt from the center part and into the east part of Iowa. The system will move east of the state by late tonight. The snow and ice models are included below.

A second weather system will follow on Wednesday but this one will be more or a nuisance then anything. Light to moderate snow will work into the state Wednesday afternoon with snow off and on (depending on your location) into Wednesday evening. Snow accumulations should be fairly light with a quick Trace-2″ expected. Also, continuing to watching for accumulating snow risk on Saturday (New Year’s Day).
