A potent storm system will bring two waves of moisture to the forecast area this week. The first round hits late tonight into Wednesday morning with light rain/snow showers developing in central Iowa and quickly shifting north into northern Iowa Wednesday afternoon into the evening. A brief break may be seen late Wednesday night into early Thursday as the first wave exits and the more potent axis of snow develops into Thursday morning. A quick trace-2″ of snow accumulation is possible late tonight through Wednesday, mainly on grass and elevated surfaces. A more potent wave of snow arrives Thursday morning across western Iowa. This risk expands to the east into central Iowa through late morning and eastern Iowa by later in the afternoon. Areas off into southern Iowa, favor more of a mix and primarily rain near the Missouri border. Snow will taper off across western Iowa by late Thursday night and central/eastern Iowa by early Friday morning. As the system exits Friday morning, the wind will quickly subside from west to east. The areas in focus will be across the northern two/three county rows where 4-8″ of snow will be in the cards with less amounts further south.
The NWS has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Buena Vista, Cerro Gordo, Cherokee, Clay, Dickinson, Emmet, Franklin, Hancock, Humboldt, Kossuth, Lyon, O’Brien, Osceola, Palo Alto, Pocahontas, Sioux, Winnebago, Worth and Wright counties which we agree on for placement. In addition, the system will have an east/southeast wind Thursday sustained 10-25 MPH with gusts 25-35 MPH which could lead to blowing of snow in areas that see the accumulating snow. The wind will switch around to the north/northwest by Friday morning sustained 10-20 MPH.
