We have two storm systems this week with the first one to hit Tuesday and another one shortly behind it by the middle of the week, so read on for the details…
A strong storm front will slide through the area Tuesday and delivering some areas a healthy swath of rain. We will see light to moderate rain showers increase across western Iowa shortly before daybreak Tuesday with this activity continuing to branch east into central and eastern Iowa through much of the day. Eventually rain will start to taper off from south to north by later Tuesday night. We will need to watch some of northwest Iowa for some wet snow mixing in as temperatures cool overnight into Wednesday morning. That said, amounts with this will be minimal with perhaps a spotty trace of accumulation.
Confidence continues to grow for a colder storm system to work in by later Wednesday night with a risk for accumulation snow and strong northerly winds. The current thought line is that snow works into west/southwest Iowa by Wednesday evening and slides east into central Iowa overnight into Thursday. The storm system maximizes on Thursday and pulls east of the forecast area by Thursday night. At this time snowfall amounts of advisory criteria look likely with potential for warning criteria but this will be all dependent on the evolution of the storm system over the next few days, so I highly encourage you to check back as we continue to piece things together.
Rain Forecast – Valid Tuesday
Potential for accumulating snow – Valid Wednesday night through Thursday night
