A large part of the forecast saw a good 2-6″ of snow accumulation yesterday with the highest totals of around 6″ recorded in east central Iowa near the town of Lowden. Going forward, today will be dry and quiet ahead of our next storm system that will bring a pulse of snow on Saturday. Snow will start to work into western Iowa shortly after daybreak Saturday with the activity quickly pressing east into central Iowa by midday and eastern Iowa by early afternoon. Areas into southern Iowa are likely to have more of a rain/snow mix. In addition, we will have a gusty southeast wind but given where the surface low will be at, gusts of 25-35 MPH will likely be brief during the day Saturday. Snow will taper of across western Iowa by early to mid-afternoon, central Iowa by the evening and eastern Iowa late Saturday night.
Amounts will be light with a quick 1-4″ of snow accumulation across a large part of the forecast area and a trace-2″ south. Also worth mentioning, this will be yet again another wet messy snow with surface temperatures in the low to middle 30s during snowfall. The surface low will then pass through central Minnesota through the back half of the weekend which will give west and central Iowa wind gusts of 30-40 MPH for most of the day Sunday. The wind will subside later Sunday evening as the system works east.
