A strong upper-level storm system will slide through the forecast area later tonight through Thursday with strong winds and thunderstorms. A localized severe weather threat is on the table for eastern zones, so read on for the full details…
Scattered rain showers will break out across western Iowa later tonight and advance to the east/northeast overnight into Thursday. The latest expectations are for scattered showers to exit eastern Iowa by late Thursday morning where we should see clearing in the cloud cover into early Thursday afternoon across east and southeast Iowa. A strong southwesterly flow with dew points to spike into the upper forties to lower fifties combined with instability values that will be just enough for this time of year to warrant a severe weather threat Thursday afternoon through the evening across eastern Iowa. The main activity will be ahead of the frontal zone later Thursday afternoon where strong southerly backed surface winds turning more westerly with height should support an isolated tornado along with the main hazards of hail and gusty winds.
In addition, strong south/southwesterly surface winds will gust 35-55 MPH Thursday afternoon through the evening. So, with that, high-profile vehicle roll-over is possible. A final push of wind from the west will hit Friday with gusts of 25-35 MPH before the system departs. Rainfall amounts will not be overly impressive with up to 0.10″ across most areas and localized 0.10-0.40″ off into eastern Iowa where strong storms will be possible. Below is the maps for severe weather, rain and wind.
We will continue to fine-tune the evolution of severe weather Thursday afternoon with a follow-up article anticipated then. Stay tuned to Iowa Storm Center.com for further updates.
