A cold front will move through Iowa tonight through Thursday bringing a variety of weather dynamics to the area. Read on for the full details…
An upper level low will continue to pivot slowly to the east today through Wednesday. Scattered rain showers will begin to brush the interior portion of northwest Iowa generally west of highway 60 late this morning. Eventually this activity will slowly spread east into much of western Iowa this afternoon through the evening. We’ll need to watch specifically northwest Iowa overnight tonight for a few thunderstorms to pop off and even a second risk of this again Wednesday afternoon between the highway 71 and I-35 corridor across northern Iowa. These are the two areas that can potentially overachieve on rainfall totals compared to modeling output. Wednesday will feature on and off scattered activity across much of the state before things taper off later Wednesday night. Rainfall amounts overall will not be that impressive with generally a 0.1″ or less but where the activity develops (like mentioned above) will be the areas to watch for perhaps a 0.10-0.40″ of rain to be squeezed out in localized spots.
Behind the cold front, the wind will switch around to the north with wind gusts ranging 25-35 MPH statewide Thursday. A few areas can achieve localized 35-40 MPH gusts in extreme northern Iowa generally north of highway 18. Colder air will usher in Thursday night allowing for a round of frost with lows in the 30s and even colder Friday night with lows in the 20s/30s where the first freeze will be in the cards. Another round of frost is possible for northern Iowa and some of central/southern Iowa Saturday night depending on how dynamics trend between now and then.
